A back row machine will help you build strong healthy back muscles. This machine is designed to isolate the back muscles whilst supporting the chest and torso. The muscles worked include the latissimus dorsi — the largest back muscle responsible for pulling the arms down and back — as well as the rhomboids, which stabilize the shoulder blades. Other muscles engaged are the posterior deltoid, teres major, and forearm muscles, including the biceps brachii, brachialis, and brachioradialis. The back row machine will also work the trapezius and forearms.
In addition to strengthening these back muscles, the seated back row machine is a good choice if you have lower back issues as you will experience less strain in this area. It’s a fairly easy machine to use and suits all levels of users.
When choosing a back row machine for your gym do consider what resistance is being offered. You will see models that include weight plates, pulley systems, and even air resistance. Ensure there is enough adjustability on offer, particularly the seat and handle positioning — this is important if the machine will have multiple users. Finally, always ensure you have the right space, including height, to accommodate the machine.
There are alternatives to the back row machine, For example, the seated cable row on a cable rowing machine, and the landmine row. With barbells, you can do the barbell row, a compound exercise which will also target the major muscles of the back and grab some dumbbells for the single arm dumbbell row.
