InBody was founded by Dr Kichul Cha who was frustrated with existing BIA devices which he saw as inaccurate and often faulty. BIA is Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis, essentially a way of measuring the body’s water composition and other components. So, in 1996 he founded InBody which is now a multinational corporation distributing products to over 80 countries.

The InBody scanner he designed is an easy to use and accurate way of analysing the composition of the body, used by health professionals, employers, and medical practitioners worldwide.

Today, InBody state that they have four values:

  • To educate the public away from BMI and weight loss towards fat loss and muscle gain
  • To motivate people to lead healthy, fit lives
  • To supply accurate data for people on their health journey which shows them the diet that is best for them
  • To continue to innovate.

InBody and body composition

The body is made up of fat, protein, minerals, and body water — this is body composition. It describes the concept of weight more accurately than BMI and will show changes as they happen over time. InBody scanner machines measure your body composition through products called body composition analysers. For more information, take a look at our blog post on understanding body composition.

InBody models

At GymEquipment.co.uk, we offer three different models of InBody machines: the InBody 270, the InBody 570s, and the InBody 970. The InBody 270 is the portable version of the machine and is widely used by health professionals who need to move it around between clients and by doctors and medical professionals. It uses a 15-second test to measure fat mass, muscle mass, and water levels.

The InBody 570 is a comprehensive non-portable model that offers 15 measures at three separate frequencies, giving a detailed report in just 45 seconds.

Finally, the InBody 970 takes a deeper look into the body using a low 3MHz frequency that penetrates cell membranes more effectively. Thanks to its enhanced reporting, this InBody scanner is commonly used by medical professionals and performance athletes.

InBody analysers in gyms

The great benefit of InBody scales to gyms and fitness professionals is that they provide detailed, accurate medical information to clients. This information can be used as the basis for both training and diet programmes, making them popular machines in PT studios.

Clients can gain a detailed understanding of their bodies and set realistic goals that will tackle the real issues. Gyms also report that the analyser is a hugely motivational tool as it records progress made. Many gyms now incorporate the analysers as part of gym memberships, or they are used as an added-on service to memberships.

Data provided

For fitness professionals, InBody machines provide guides on how to interpret all the data. The type of information you can then discuss with clients includes their body composition breakdown, and how to determine if someone is under/over or has ‘normal’ weight, muscle, and fat. You will also be able to look at possible muscle imbalances and see if a client is developed in all sections of their body.

Using the InBody analyser

The process of using an InBody scanner is pretty simple. A client will step on the analyser which measures their weight. They will then place their thumbs on a set of oval electrodes and, depending on the model, wait for either 15 or 60 seconds and the test is done.
