The trap bar was invented during the mid 1980's by American powerlifter Al Gerard and was designed to support his strength training while reducing stress on a chronic back injury. The more upright posture produced by trap bars make them particularly useful for lifters aiming to minimize lower back strain.

In recent years the simple trap bar has been enhanced to offer the "open trap bar" (one side is open to allow for easy step in step out), rotating grip sizes (encouraging you to work your forearms in the grip phase), ability to stand the bar on it's side for asy storage.

What Makes the Trap Bar Different?

Thanks to its hexagonal design and hand placement at the sides, the trap bar shifts the center of mass to align with the user's body during lifts. This setup encourages a more upright torso position, which helps reduce strain and movement in the lumbar spine (lower back).
