Hex Bars

The hex bar is a feature of most commercial gym spaces and allows the user to perform a wide variety of different exercises, most commonly including the deadlift or squat. As the name suggests, it is a hexagonally shaped bar and can be loaded by the user just as any other bar is. The difference is the user positioning themselves inside the space made by the hexagon. Invented by American powerlifter Al Gerard in the mid-1980’s to aid his strength training whilst minimising negative effects on his chronic back injury, check our options.

The hexagonal shape of the hex bar with the hand positioning either side forces a shift in the centre of mass, with the centre mass of the bar in line with the user’s body during the lift. This encourages a more upright posture, removing strain and reducing movement of the lumbar (lower) spine.

A number of different exercises can be performed using hex bars. These include movements such as the squat and deadlift, as well as the farmers walk and hex bar jumps. The primary muscles worked by the hex bar therefore, include the quads, glutes, hamstrings and muscles of the lower back.

Pros of the Hex Bar

  • A good option for beginners, aiding them getting to grips with hinging mechanics
  • Reducing strain on the lower back
  • Potentially reducing injury risk during compound movements
  • Adjustability in choosing either low or high handles
  • Increasing quadricep engagement
