The historical roots of boxing date all the way back to ancient Greece and Rome, and today boxing is still a popular activity due to its effectiveness in achieving a full body workout and improving cardiovascular fitness - mostly using boxing gloves! As a movement, it primarily targets the shoulders, chest, back muscles, biceps, triceps, core muscles and lower leg muscles.

It is essential when boxing to have the right boxing glove, with boxing gloves designed to protect both your hands and your opponent from knockouts or inflicting cut injuries. Different boxing gloves are designed differently, with variation in weight and material important differentiators when choosing the right pair of gloves for you.

Why Weight Matters

The standard boxing glove has weight options of 12,14 and 16 ounces. In choosing boxing gloves, your own weight is important to determine glove weight. For example, if you weigh between 125 and 150 lbs, 12-ounce boxing gloves are recommended. This should increase by 2 ounces when fighting an opponent, rather than hitting the heavy bag. A 12- or 14-ounce glove is a good starting option if versatility between bag and opponent is what you are looking for.

Which Material and Tie-up Technique?

When the intended use is boxing training, gloves are made usually from leather, with a Velcro closure. This is optimal for use in training with both a heavy bag and against an opponent. The leather material increases durability, and the Velcro closure increases stability. The material changes to neoprene for technique training using the heavy bag.

When the intended use is sparring, gloves are heavier at 16 or more ounces.

When the intended use is for competition, padding is stiffer, and most are required through regulations to have a lace-up closure compared to the normal Velcro.

Here at GymEquipment.co.uk we offer a range of different pairs of boxing gloves, differing by intended purpose as detailed above. Weight options run from 8 ounces up to 16 ounces. The price ranges from £40 to around £85, with the top end of this price range featuring a moulded shape to improve fist formation and inner bindings for ease of hand insertion.
