MACE CONTAINER GYM

Mace Construct Ltd, a leading UK construction company, was awarded an 18-month project at Gatwick Airport. As part of their commitment to staff wellbeing, Mace planned to build an onsite wellbeing centre that would include a fully kitted out gym for staff and subcontractors. Recognising that traditional gym memberships were often underused due to work time constraints, Mace wanted to provide a convenient and accessible solution during working hours - the container gym!
THE BRIEF
The key requirement was that any gym be housed in a 'versatile' and 'removable' structure. The entire wellbeing centre, including Mace’s site offices, was situated on a car park that would need to be returned to its original function after project completion.
To meet this need, we helped develop a modular container gym facility that used a system of three converted and then connected shipping containers, offering portability without compromising on quality or function. Waterproofed, wired up and with air conditioning, the container gym fitted all the objectives and met the brief.
PROCESS
GymEquipment.co.uk began by collaborating with a dedicated focus group from Mace to define key staff requirements and objectives. The gym needed to be inclusive, which meant suitable for beginners and experienced exercisers alike. Scondly, it had to be designed to ensure safety, accessibility and comfort for all users.
Over several months, we refined the design and specification. The gym was built to accommodate up to eight users at a time, with space and functionality tailored for both individual workouts and small group fitness classes. Site restrictions at London Gatwick required a stringent compliance process: all contractors and suppliers involved were required to submit full RAMS (Risk Assessment and Method Statement) documentation and hold valid safety certifications. This ensured seamless integration with Mace and with Gatwick’s high-security and safety standards.

OUTCOME
The Mace gym at Gatwick Airport has become a stand-out feature of the Mace wellbeing centre. Staff response has been overwhelmingly positive, with high engagement levels and a noticeable uplift in morale and satisfaction. Mace reports early improvements in workforce wellbeing and considers the gym a vital asset to its onsite employee support offering.
