Aerobic steps

Aerobic steps are a raised platform, usually made of plastic with a non-slip surface for safety. Most platforms can be modified to make them higher. If you increase the height, you will need to work your body harder. Adding hand weights can also make your step routine more challenging.

Before buying your exercise stepper, check that it has at least two adjustable height levels to offer you enough versatility in your workouts, and a maximum user body weight that you can see (this is usually about 110kg).

Compared to other pieces of gym equipment the step platform is actually quite cheap and small, so you don’t need a huge space for them. It is also relatively simple to use. You start by simply stepping up onto it, and then you can progress to more complicated moves. This makes them a perfect addition to small fitness spaces like garage or garden gyms. If you’re looking to create the ultimate fitness studio at home, be sure to ask about our gym design service.

Exercising with an aerobic stepper

Aerobic steppers are great for cardiovascular and muscular endurance. Workouts using a stepper box incorporate both upper and lower body movements, particularly in the legs. An added benefit of a step platform is that it can offer a low-impact cardio workout, so will put less stress on your joints compared to running or jogging.

Whilst we have said that the fitness step is a fairly straightforward piece of gym equipment it does need to be treated with respect. Things to consider include always making sure your complete foot touches the ground. Your knee should also never be lifted more than 90 degrees, and you should always place your foot on the centre of the step with the heel down to avoid tendon injury.
