Boxing Gloves & Pads

Essential for any kind of boxing or padwork in the gym, gloves and pads can usually be borrowed from the gym, or if you find you like this fitness workout, then we suggest youi buy your own.

Boxing pads can be used in boxing training, kick boxing and for general fitness. Essentially their purpose is to simulate a combat scenario, with the pads resembling your opponent.

What Skills Will I Work Out When Using Pads?

When using boxing pads you will need to get your stance and balance right, so your core will get a good workout. You will also develop coordination, focus, distancing, timing, speed and combinations. In addition to this you will develop power and fitness. Power will be developed as you hit harder and faster and fitness benefits include improved stamina, muscle endurance and general aerobic capacity.

What's the Different Kinds of Pads You Can Buy?

Here we have included the most common pads that you will find in gyms:

Focus pads-These are the ones most associated with traditional boxing and are great for practicing any punch including hooks, jabs and uppercuts. If you also want to practice with other parts of your body including the knees, elbows and kicks then consider the Thai pads. Thai pads are used in Thai boxing but are a great buy if you want to use other parts of your body and not just your fists. Strike Shields are really for the more experienced boxer and Body Pads are also good if you have some experience in punching.

Boxing gloves

Boxing gloves come in a huge variety of sizes, colours and materials. So what are the key things to remember when purchasing a pair of boxing gloves?

Material

The best material to buy for longevity is leather. But it will cost you more. Leather is a great choice if you are going to be sparring and using heavy punch bags.

Laces

Gloves tied on with laces will give you a good snug fit. Velcro wrist straps are popular as you can easily get them on and off but the fit won’t be as good as laces. Do bear in mind if you buy laces though that you will need someone around to help you get them on and off!

Size

The weight of boxing gloves varies from 10-22 ounces. Ladies gloves usually come in 8, 10, 12 oz with 10oz being the most popular. Mens gloves range from 12, 14, 16 oz. Bear in mind that the heavier the glove the more protection it offers.

Hand Wraps

It is also advisable when training to always wear hand wraps which will provide extra protection for your knuckles, wrists and the small bones in your hand.

Sparring Gloves

Sparring gloves come in weight ranges from 16, 18, 20 and 22 oz.
