Boxing gloves come in a huge variety of sizes, colours and materials. So what are the key things to remember when purchasing a pair of boxing gloves?
The best material to buy for longevity is leather. But it will cost you more. Leather is a great choice if you are going to be sparring and using heavy punch bags.
Gloves tied on with laces will give you a good snug fit. Velcro wrist straps are popular as you can easily get them on and off but the fit won’t be as good as laces. Do bear in mind if you buy laces though that you will need someone around to help you get them on and off!
The weight of boxing gloves varies from 10-22 ounces. Ladies gloves usually come in 8, 10, 12 oz with 10oz being the most popular. Mens gloves range from 12, 14, 16 oz. Bear in mind that the heavier the glove the more protection it offers.
It is also advisable when training to always wear hand wraps which will provide extra protection for your knuckles, wrists and the small bones in your hand.
Sparring gloves come in weight ranges from 16, 18, 20 and 22 oz.
